DC GOES CARBON NEUTRAL

Climate change cannot be ignored. It will require a transition to a low-carbon economy and we want to be part of the solution by pushing the world towards a more sustainable future. In 2019, we decided to cut the carbon and become carbon neutral, but the journey will not end here. Learn how we continue our efforts below.

CUTTING THE CARBON

Danske Commodities' sustainability programme, 'Cut the Carbon', involves three main workstreams:

  1. Reducing carbon emissions
  2. Switching to renewable energy
  3. Offsetting through certified carbon credits

For us, carbon neutrality is an ongoing journey, encompassing a long-term outlook on sustainability and striving for constant improvement of the business practices of the company. In other words, we aim to reduce, balance and repeat.

REDUCE

To combat our direct and indirect carbon emissions, we try to adopt as many sustainable and socially responsible policies in our business as possible.

We promote responsible procurement, carpooling, travelling by train and opting for teleconferencing instead of business trips whenever feasible. We support the use of organic, local and unprocessed food and repurpose our leftovers, and in total opting to reduce our meat consumption with 10% in 2020.

Recycling is a vital focus area. We sort paper, organic and residual waste, turning our organic waste into biogas. Further, used IT equipment is refurbished, donated or recycled.

BALANCE

For Danske Commodities, carbon neutrality is a concept of balance. To achieve balance, we source 100% renewable electricity from local Danish wind turbines and offset the remaining emissions with carbon credits certified by the Gold Standard, established by WWF to ensure that carbon reduction projects under the UN’s Clean Development Mechanism contribute to sustainable development.

Our emission accounting is based upon the world’s most widely used accounting standard, the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG).

REPEAT

For us, carbon neutrality is an iterative process, meaning that each time we repeat the cycle, we move closer to the desired result of becoming a truly green business. Our company's climate targets are aligned with the Paris Agreement and the 2030 climate goal of the Danish government to reduce emissions by 70%.

This is because Danske Commodities firmly believes that a sustainability programme led through ambitious long-term targets is the business model of the future.

FOOTPRINT

Going forward, we look at more and new ways to reduce our carbon emissions further, including more emission types in the scope of our GHG inventory.

TARGETS

  • For 2020, the target is to reduce our emissions by 10%.
  • For 2030, the target is to reduce our emissions by 70%.

FROM WASTE TO BIOGAS

New recycling bins were installed in DC, an idea that originated from our colleagues Rikke and Justina. By sorting waste and turning organics into biogas, we generate energy, cut carbon emissions and help prevent environmental degradation. Let the sorting begin!

GOING MEATLESS ON MONDAYS

One day a week, we cut the meat. Through Meatless Mondays in the canteen, our kitchen chef Christian helps us reach the goal of reducing our meat consumption by 10% in 2020. Giving up meat for just one day a week won't change the world, but every meatless meal helps just a little bit.

TURNING CLIPS INTO PROSTHETICS

Susanne and Helene, two of our devoted employees, decided to take matters into their own hands and level up our recycling by harvesting the clips from our soda cans. The clips are donated to a Thai hospital to make light-weight prosthetics. Sometimes, little things make a big difference...
