Meet Esben Nielsen

Studying: Economics and Business Administration
Position: Junior Portfolio Analyst
Employed since: June 2020
Fun fact: Before coming to DC, I worked on a farm

MY BACKGROUND

I grew up in Skanderborg, a smaller Danish city in Jutland not far from Aarhus. I moved to Aarhus to study Economics and Business Administration. Besides my studies, I have taught other students in statistics. Just before I started my journey at DC I was supposed to go on exchange, but that was suddenly cancelled due to the COVID-19 situation. Two weeks after the cancellation I had a new job at DC, so as one door closed another one opened.

WHY I WANTED TO WORK FOR DC

Working at DC you really opens opportunities that you don’t get anywhere else as a student employee. It is a place where you can develop yourself both personally and professionally, as you are treated on the same terms as full-time employees while also having the opportunity to develop your skills (e.g. programming) through the nature of the job and DC University. Perhaps even more important to me, it is a place of work that supplements my studies well. DC offers flexible working hours and the opportunity to use theory from my studies in a practical setting.

Esben Nielsen, Junior Portfolio Analyst

WHAT I DO

I’m a Portfolio Analyst, meaning that I primarily support our portfolio conducting various analyses using VBA, SQL or similar. Furthermore, I help build new tools or improve the existing ones to make the business run even smoother and getting an even better overview of the business. DC is operating in an ever-changing market, which also creates a constant need to develop and come up with new and even better solutions.

MY TYPICAL WORK DAY

It may sound a bit cliché but no two days are the same at DC. There are always new challenges to solve which is part of what makes this workplace so exiting. However, if I should sum up the typical workday, it involves working with a lot of raw data, trying to optimise processes through various programming languages and Excel.

THE BEST PART OF MY JOB

The best part of my job is the people I work with and the culture in general. I get to work together with an ambitious team all working toward the same goals, which is highly motivating to be part of. Additionally, I love the responsibility and opportunities you get from day 1 working at DC!
