Record solar output resulted in price swings, increasing need for flexibility
In 2024, solar energy overtook coal for the first time in the European electricity market, with solar accounting for 11% of the EU’s electricity, while coal accounted for 10%. Solar is now the fastest-growing energy source in the EU, according to the global think tank Ember.
Zooming in on Denmark, the share of solar-generated power also peaked in 2024 with a total capacity of 3,945 MW. A good thing for the climate, but the record-high solar output fuelled price volatility as weather dependency increased. During the summer, the market saw hundreds of hours with negative prices, while ‘dunkelflaute’ weather events in the fall sent prices soaring.
The price signals are clear: flexible generation and more energy storage solutions are needed to ensure a stable energy transition. At Danske Commodities, we want to support this transition through asset optimisation and efficient energy trading across borders.

Responsibility
Sustainable high performance. Together.
In 2024, we introduced a new employee value proposition to ensure that our performance culture is sustainable over time. Simply put, we want our employees to fuel their ambitions and deliver outstanding results year after year, without running out of energy. And how do we do that? By creating a workplace where impact, collaboration and well-being are the foundation for hitting those big goals.
A lasting impact where our story began
We want to create a positive impact in Aarhus, where we were founded and where we are headquartered. This is our way of giving back to the people and communities that have shaped us over the past 20 years, from our beginnings with just a handful of employees and throughout our growth journey into a global company with more than 600 employees.

Creating an inclusive neighbourhood
We donated around EUR 670,000 (DKK 5 million) to fund a new homeless shelter in a new Aarhus district near our future headquarters. As we establish ourselves in this neighbourhood, we see it as our responsibility to be part of supporting homeless and vulnerable people in this area with a safe space for comfort, support and social interaction. By doing so, we hope to play a part in making the new district a diverse and welcoming area in Aarhus that embraces all its citizens.
To further extend our support, we have partnered with the NGO Værestedets Venner (Friends of the Homeless Shelter) to arrange volunteer events, where some of our employees cook dinners for the shelter’s users, with all costs covered by us. Additionally, we donate around EUR 6,600 annually from our refundable can deposit collection to the homeless shelter. Thanks to a social security funding scheme, this donation funds more than one full-time employee at the shelter. As a final gesture, each month one of our employees delivers cake made by our canteen to the homeless shelter’s users as a small act of kindness.

Supporting female students in STEM
We donated around EUR 67,000 (DKK 500,000) to the NGO High5Girls to support female secondary school students pursuing university-level studies in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), which have traditionally been male-dominated fields. To recognise the challenges women may face when choosing a career path few women have taken, we have partnered with High5Girls to launch a role model programme. This programme offers mentorship from female employees in tech companies to inspire and guide female students. It also helps female students build a network of like-minded peers and mentors they can mirror themselves in to boost their confidence and help them feel less isolated in their career goals. Several of our female tech employees have volunteered as role models to challenge stereotypes and show that in a supportive workplace, what truly matters is your contributions, not your gender.
Our partnership with High5Girls directly supports our diversity goal of increasing the representation of female employees. As our organisation becomes more tech-driven, we recognise the importance of building a future pipeline of female tech talent to help close the gender gap in the industry.
