Henrik Lind's tips for spending the summer in Aarhus

Spending the summer in Aarhus? We have asked our former CEO, Henrik Lind, who was born and raised in Denmark's second largest city, to recommend five activities when vacationing in the city of smiles.

Restaurant Latin in Aarhus' Latin Quarter is a personal favourite of mine, especially their Soupe de poisson and Moules Marinières. It is a small, intimate restaurant, and surprisingly it is not difficult to get a table there. Also, it offers great value for money: you get three courses for around 300 DKK.

Aarhus Bay has clean, wonderful water, and there are a lot of possibilities for using it – from the harbour to the beaches of Aarhus. I am an avid winter swimmer myself, which I can recommend. But right now, the water is around 15 degrees, so it is fresh without being too cold for people who don't like winter swimming.

For kids

I often go to Dokk1 with my kids. Apart from being a library, the house offers a lot of different activities for kids, and you can do anything from playing hide and seek to just relax and enjoy the view of the water.

This isn't directly related to Aarhus, but to reading is always a part of my summer vacation. There are especially two books that have inspired me. The first is Stephen Covey's "Seven habits of highly effective people". I received that as a gift from my wife Karina, when I first decided to start my own business. It is a great book about self-management and personal growth. The other book is Jack Welsh' "Winning". I read that for the first time in January 2006, and it has been an inspiration for me ever since. DC people will recognise some of the principles that also guide this company, e.g. "If you don't have competitive edge, don't compete."

Culture and Coffee

Sometimes the Danish summer weather calls for indoor activities and luckily Aarhus has a lot to offer. One of my favourite places is Moesgaard Museum, which is an interesting and interactive museum for all age groups. Also, their café is a nice place to enjoy a good cup of coffee, while overlooking the picturesque landscape. But if you are in the mood for coffee without the culture, then I urge you to spend some time just hanging out at my favourite coffee house, Great Coffee. This cosy café is situated in Klostergade, and they serve some of the best coffee in the city. If it is a rainy summer, this is the place to go.
