Your renewable energy certificate questions. Answered.
What are Guarantees of Origin and how do they work?
A Guarantee of Origin is a certificate that proves one MWh of electricity was generated from a renewable source. It is issued to the producer and can be sold separately from the physical electricity – allowing buyers to claim that their consumption was matched by renewable generation, regardless of where the power physically came from on the grid.
What is the difference between GOs, REGOs, ROCs and El-certificates?
These are all forms of renewable energy certificate, but they operate in different markets and under different regulatory frameworks. Guarantees of Origin are used across continental Europe. REGOs are the UK equivalent for proving renewable consumption. ROCs are UK certificates associated with older renewable support schemes. El-certificates are used in Norway and Sweden. We source across all of them – so your coverage matches wherever your obligations sit.
How do renewable energy certificates support Scope 2 reporting?
Under the GHG Protocol’s market-based method for Scope 2 accounting, renewable energy certificates are the recognised instrument for claiming that electricity consumption was sourced from renewables. Without certificates, consumption must be reported using grid average emission factors – typically higher than the renewable-sourced alternative. Certificates provide the auditable documentation needed to report a lower Scope 2 figure with credibility.
Can certificates be structured into a long-term PPA arrangement?
Yes – in long-term PPA structures, certificate flows are typically managed alongside the physical power offtake. We structure and manage certificate delivery to align with your sustainability goals and reporting requirements throughout the contract duration, ensuring full traceability and continuous compliance.
