Fun fact: I used to play lead guitar in a death metal band in high school
During my search for a master thesis subject, I found the possibility of writing in collaboration with DC about machine learning strategies for automated trading in the German intraday market. At the time, the Automated Trading department in DC did not exist and we were only three people, so it was an incredibly exciting opportunity. After handing in my thesis, DC offered me a full-time position. I was then responsible for developing some of the first day-ahead automated trading algorithms for intraday in DC and helped starting up the Automated Trading department.
I was excited at the large degree of autonomy and responsibility in the innovative and creative atmosphere that characterises DC. Also being part of an initially very small team (automated trading) almost felt like being part of a start-up, which has since grown tremendously both in terms of the number of employees and value creation in DC.
Andreas Holm Nielsen, Industrial PhD
As an industrial PhD in Machine Learning at DC, I work on novel research in computer vision and atmospheric science for improving weather forecasts based on satellite images. Weather is one of the most critical factors influencing renewables production and consumption. Since DC's competitors are increasingly using the same data sets and weather providers, any edge we can get in our weather forecasts will directly generate more value for DC and our customers.
The typical day as an industrial PhD in DC varies quite a bit. Some days I might be teaching an advanced Machine Learning course for analysts and quants in DC. Other days I might be working on a project mapping all solar power plants in Germany on a satellite image to help make better and higher resolution solar power production forecasts.
Having the opportunity to really dive into the nitty-gritty details of advanced machine learning research and apply it for practical applications in DC, especially in the underdeveloped but rapidly growing field of deep learning using satellite images for weather forecasting purposes. Also, working together with some extremely smart and ambitious people in Automated Trading is very inspiring and rewarding.
