Education: Master's in International Business
Position: CRO and VP, Head of Risk Management
Employed since: February 2006
Fun fact: I spent my first working day in DC going to Ikea, buying and assembling our new company lunch table.
Born and raised in Aarhus, professionally born and raised in DC where I swapped a questionable semi-pro handball career with the chance to develop DC’s activities on the Trading floor and since 2017 in Risk Management.
After my first interview, it was the geographical expansion and the daily game of beating the market. What has made me stay in the early years is the winning culture initially created by Henrik Lind’s vision and drive. His passion for constant development and optimisation and his willingness to delegate responsibility created a culture that seemed to permeate every action we did. Later, I think that the fact that DC has gone through so many interesting phases from rapid growth to crisis (and back on top) and from entrepreneur to being part of a global energy major has made me stay.
Jakob Sørensen, VP, CRO, Head of Risk Management
As the CRO, my main responsibility is to ensure that DC has a mature Risk Management organisation. In a trading company, the Risk Management function is essential and we need to perform the dual responsibility of being a business guardian, making sure that the various risks that we take are controlled and deliberate, and a business partner adding quantitative and qualitative assessments to support our business. When it comes down to it we have overlapping interests with the business in ensuring the best risk-adjusted return for DC.
I have to throw in the cliché that the typical work day doesn’t exist. Looking at my calendar this week, I’ll be discussing topics as the best way to value gas storages, the project plan of the Empire Wind in the US, the way forward for the next phases of our ETRM implementation, the plan for internal audit, how to best risk manage certificates (ROCs) in the UK and where DC will be in 2025.
The only constant is change as they say…
First of all it’s the colleagues and the culture in DC. I think we have a great team of highly competent employees across the board. And one of the privileges in my position is that I get too be involved with colleagues in all units on a daily basis. The diversity in topics is definitely also a plus. And lastly, I must say that I enjoy being able to actively influence the direction and strategy of the company I have been part of building up from it’s infancy to now where we are a major player in our industry.
The success of our company is built on having the brightest minds working across the entire organisation.
